In our Kamloops Road Trips series, we’ll be exploring day routes you and your friends can take to get out and enjoy the surrounding scenery. Four main highways intersect within the city of Kamloops for access to any direction on the compass, and considering the views and close proximity to lookout points, wineries and parks, it’s no wonder weekend road trips are so popular with Kamloops drivers.
Kamloops Wine Trail
Start off by packing a picnic lunch at the local farmer’s market Saturday morning, then head out to your pre-arranged wine tasting at Privato Vineyard and Winery via Westsyde Road. You’ll probably want to take photos of their vineyard, take a leisurely stroll on their lawns and test their Burgundy wines (unless you’re the DD of course). Pop in across the road to the Woodward Cider Co. for a tour of this new cidery then head back towards Kamloops, cross the North Thompson River, take highway 5 south, and turn left onto East Shuswap Road. You’ll see views of hoodoos, grasslands, small mountains and hopefully some local wildlife. Along the way, stop for a picnic lunch, or visit Harper’s Trail Estate Winery to enjoy gorgeous views of the vineyard and their locally famous 2019 Rose. Five minutes away is Sagewood Winery for more photo ops and wine tasting, then loop back to Kamloops and enjoy the sunset from one of our city viewpoints or Riverside Park. Once home, your DD can enjoy testing the wine you picked up along the way. Next trip, plan to visit Monte Creek Winery for the day, to explore BC’s newest appellation in the Thompson Valley and enjoy some of their world class wines and chef inspired menu.
Preparing For Your Road Trip
Throughout the season, it’s a good idea to check pending weather, and BC’s road reports for break-out forest fires, or other delays that may interrupt your trip or compromise your safety. In preparation, you’ll need to pack your summer emergency kit, check your spare tire to make sure it’s in good repair, and notify friends to let them know your route and when you expect to arrive back home, especially when traveling alone.
